Well, it was an offering that was established to support kingdom work right here in Colorado. In 1975, the Colorado Baptist General Convention Executive Board voted to rename this offering in honor of Nicy Murphy. Nicy Murphy was hired in 1956 to serve as the first executive secretary of the Women’s Missionary Union right here in Colorado. Through her tireless work for missionary support and missions education, we can still feel that work today, and the Colorado Missions Offering still has that same purpose, to see people won to Jesus Christ.
Today, the Colorado Missions Offering is used in many ways to accomplish this purpose. For example, resort and leisure ministries are supported through the Colorado Missions Offering, so that those who come to ski in the beautiful mountains of Colorado can experience a mountaintop worship service where the gospel is presented.
The Rocky Mountain Campus of Gateway Seminary is supported so it helps men and women who are preparing for gospel ministry.
Colorado Baptist Disaster Relief is supported so that those who are at their lowest point because of natural disasters, people who have lost everything, experience the love of Jesus in tangible and practical ways.
Local associations are supported. As churches give to the Colorado Missions Offering, a percentage of what they give is sent back to their local association so contextualized ministry can be used in the various regions around the state. Pastoral care and training is provided.
Church planting is also supported so that there is a gospel witness in areas that are either underserved or where no gospel witness exists.
And finally, state missions. Churches that participate in the Colorado Missions Offering can apply for a one-time-a-year grant that can help them to accomplish the things that they feel God is calling them to do in their own local setting.
The beauty of the Colorado Missions Offering is that it’s given by Colorado Baptists, and 100% of it is used by Colorado Baptists to reach people in Colorado. Because you give, lives are touched for eternity. You see, we’re all in this together.
