A Day For Ministry Wives

By Kaylee Looney

Rachel Van Gorder attended the Flourish event, A Day to Equip Ministry Wives, at Vanguard Church not fully knowing what to expect, but looking forward to getting some practical tips as well as the opportunity to be around other pastors' wives.

Nicy Murphy Never Lost Her Enthusiasm for Seeing Lives Changed

In 1955 Nicy Murphy, a young, single woman from Oklahoma, became a pioneer servant among Southern Baptists in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.

The Colorado Baptist General Convention was organized in 1956 and Nicy Murphy served as the first director of Woman’s Missionary Union for the five-and-a-half-state convention. She raised the banner of mission education and missionary support throughout the growing convention.  She gave leadership to teaching new believers and young churches the value of being on mission where they lived and extending their influence to all parts of the world.

Ambitions

Ambitions . . . they keep you going, but they can go bad. Several years ago I was skimming the newspaper and my eyes caught a headline, AMBITION TOO OFTEN OUTSTRIPS EXECUTION. I have to be honest and say that I did not read any further and I didn’t get the author’s name because the title hit me between the eyes. In fact, I stopped immediately, grabbed the closest pair of scissors and cut out that headline and taped it to my desk, just over my laptop. As I am writing this blog, I am looking at the slightly faded and brittle news clipping that has saved my credibility more than once.

Girls’ Ministry

There’s a growing trend of churches starting girls’ ministry due to the overwhelming need to speak into the lives of young ladies needing guidance through the unique problems of womanhood.

Pam Gibbs, Lifeway Girls’ Ministry Specialist, recently shared at Define weekend, about the needs of girls and how churches can effectively reach them. “Many of you are already doing a girls’ ministry. Anytime you are intentional about meeting the needs of teen girls, that’s girls’ ministry.”

She explained that a girls’ ministry is a part of the church’s ministry to not only the girls, but to parents and leaders as well. Ministry can be incorporated anywhere girls are and should involve discipleship, in addition to, just fun.

Real Problems, Real Girls

If you follow statistics about teen girls today, they are not pretty.  The numbers include anything from dieting and eating disorders to poor self-image, cutting issues and everything in between.  Girls, right here in Colorado have to deal with real problems. CHRISTIAN girls, right here in Colorado have to deal with REAL problems.

Sowing and Reaping in Northeastern Colorado

Recently, I was invited to speak at a women’s ministry meeting at Arapahoe Road Baptist Church. The theme for our meeting was: “Sowing and Reaping in northeastern Colorado”. As I was preparing for my missions presentation, the Lord led me to John 4:34-37: “My food, said Jesus, is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. Do you not say, ‘Four months more and then the harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.

Tips From The Trenches

There’s no greater wisdom gained than by reading God’s Word. However, the next best thing is gaining wisdom from seasoned servants. We asked several Colorado Women Ministry Leaders for their top tip on leadership and here’s what they said:

“Send cards out to the women of the church to let them know that someone is thinking of them."  Kaye Simon, Lochwood Christian Fellowship in Lakewood

“Get a great team of volunteers of varied ages and talents and PRAY about everything.” Marcy Stoddard, Mississippi Avenue, Aurora

“Get your job description in writing.” Jenny E. Schappaugh, Trinity Baptist Church
