Church Planting

Church Planting Network

Staying connected is probably one of the most significant and important things you can do as part of the Colorado Baptists Church Planting Network. Church Planters, Church Planting Catalyst and Church Planting Missionaries/Trainers/Teachers are listed here, by Baptist Associations, in order for you to stay connected and further network with one another.

About the Church Planting Team

The  Church Planting and Missions Team facilitates in identifying unreached people groups and planting new churches among them. Whether in ethnic communities, resort and leisure areas, or within socio-economic groups, we're leading Colorado Baptists to penetrate all pockets of lostness in our state.

Thoughts from a Church Planter’s Wife

By Becky Little

“WHAT?” “Are you serious?” “Have you lost your mind?”

Yes, those were the words that I uttered when my husband told me he was leaving his current position in a large church in Colorado to plant a church.  Security is extremely important to me and we were leaving that….again.

We were called to Colorado from Texas in 2001 to take a job at an established church.  All I had ever known, my family, my career and the southern culture that I loved and adored were all left behind.  Over the years, I had grown accustomed to life in Colorado and had grown to love the people in our community and church. Now this…shock, disbelief and denial are the three words I would use to describe what I was feeling.

Meet the Freng Family

By Dan Freng

My wife Kelly, our five kids (Noah, Jasmine, Brian, Isaac, and Shamie), and I love Littleton.  Our family loves to be outside hiking, biking, camping, and playing sports together.  Our family has been blessed to call Littleton our home (twice now as we recently moved back to Littleton from Yankton, South Dakota) and we have made many great friends here.

Littleton is a community filled with people who value education, community, recreation and family.  In fact, most people who live in Littleton and visit Littleton see the community as a nearly postcard-perfect city; a great place to live, work, and play.  While Littleton is all of those things, it is also a community desperately in need of the Gospel.

Fourteen of Colorado's Church Planters Trained

By Kaylee Looney

Fourteen participants took turns receiving their certificate for completing Church Planter Basic Training.  The atmosphere of the group was relaxed and playful as each participant made his/her way to the front of the conference room.  They were serenaded by the rest of the group to a slightly off-key, a cappella version of Pomp and Circumstance.  The laughter was a welcomed ending to the three-day intensive training.

Pastor to Pastor

By Steve Hoekstra

One of the many wonderful things I enjoy about the ministry God has given me is getting to spend time with pastors.  This past week I was driving through the beautiful San Luis Valley with a pastor friend.  We began by sharing some great stories about God working in churches throughout Western Colorado.  Then, without even realizing it, we fell into “commiserating” about churches that seemed to have difficulties and why.  As I realized it I said “I think I have gotten a little jaded over the years.” My pastor friend agreed that he probably had also.

Langley's Kingdom Work

By Steve Hoekstra

Phil and Judy Langley came back to serve Colorado Baptists in 2004 as the Associational Director of Missions for the Continental Divide Association in South Central Colorado.   I say came back because they had been in Western Colorado before as Church Planters in the Parachute area.  Colorado is a mission field and Phil and Judy are missionaries.   When they returned to Colorado in 2004, they looked around their Association and saw great potential and great need.

Colorado Church Planters Need Your Prayers

By Jim Misloski

In the last issue of the Rocky Mountain Baptist we introduced you to some of our most recent arrivals to the Colorado church planting field. In the last 5 years Colorado Baptist Churches have started over 50 church plants that are currently on the ground and growing. We’re going to introduce you to all of them before this series of articles is finished. We hope you will join us in regularly praying for our planters by name. Planting a new church is a declaration of war. They need your prayer cover as they storm the strongholds the enemy has erected in the communities where they have been called to start a new church.

Witnessing to Judea and Samaria too!

By Dr. Mark Edlund

And you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you and you will be my witnesses in … Judea and Samaria… Acts 1:8

A guiding verse in my life is Acts 1:8.  My wife jokes … kind of … that I can do a service that can marry a couple, bury a believer, dedicate a building, ordain a new minister, or install a new pastor using this passage.  The truth is that our Lord gave us two very clear imperatives after His resurrection and before His ascension.  The first we call the Great Commission (found in Matthew 28:18 – 20).  There we are commanded to make disciples of all people groups by going, teaching and baptizing.  The second imperative is Acts 1:8.  In this scripture, which has indeed been a life verse and a spiritual focus in my life, we are told to be His witnesses in four concentric circles.  And our Lord states that all four concentric circles are our responsibility as believers and as His church.

Cole's Impact on Colorado

By Dr. Mark Edlund

Greg Cole’s impact on Colorado can be recorded in chapters of ministry.  I first met Greg when I came to Colorado as Executive Director in April of 2001.  I made it my goal to tour each of the 11 associations of Colorado to meet the pastors and learn about the churches.  I was guided by the Associational Directors of Missions (ADOMs) for each of these groups of churches.  At the time Greg was an ADOM and he was the one to introduce me to the churches and pastors of the Pikes Peak Baptist Association, but I’m getting ahead of myself in relating Greg’s impact on Colorado.

Churches Planting Churches Training 2013

Many pastors and church leaders desire to reproduce churches through starting new churches. Often there seems to be more questions than answers on how to accomplish this task. Many would love to have a guide that would assist their congregation in making this church planting dream a reality.

“Churches Planting Churches” Training (CPCT) is a biblically-based, practical resource. The event is a “workshop” for planting new churches, not a conference.  You will actually work with your team to complete an implementation assignment before you leave the CPCT.

A Christmas Eve Service to Remember

By Jane Allen

As we began planning our Christmas Eve service, we could not have known all that awaited us.  At The Bridge, we normally have two services on Sunday mornings.  We decided to combine the services and only have one service on December 23, 2012.  We decided to make it a family service, which included children in the service as well.  Not only that, but we invited the kids to wear their pajamas.

Our service was planned for 10:00am.  The music was picked out. The message was rehearsed and ready to go. Everything was set and “prepared” well in advance.  Or so we thought.

An Unexpected Miracle

By Lee & Dee Byram

On Christmas Eve the snow began to fall steadily. That night our family was outside shoveling, building snowmen and throwing snowballs at one another. A neighbor from across the street joined in on the fun. We invited him to join us for Christmas dinner.

Jeff* came for dinner on Christmas evening. He was kind and full of stories about his life experiences and referenced his Lord Jesus several times. Lee was able to share with him our plan to start a church in Hotchkiss. Jeff was very interested. So Lee offered to take Jeff to lunch on Saturday for further discussion.

Pray for Colorado Church Planters

By Kaylee Looney

Recent statistics have shown that 72 percent of Southern Baptist Churches have plateaued or are in a state of decline, and almost 900 churches are closing their doors annually. Such evidence is startling and serves to solidify the argument for more church plants.

But it will take more than a new church name, location and pastor to sustain a church plant. Each endeavor will need dedicated volunteer servants, financial support and, most importantly, prayer. The following is a list of ten Colorado church planters. Please embrace their effort to further the Kingdom of God by committing to include them in your prayer time.

Meet the Long Family

Richard and Linda Long are not your normal church planting couple. Richard worked as a pilot for many years before retiring and attending Seminary. Now in their 70s, the Longs are starting their first church in homes, in Grand Junction. Please pray for them as they follow their calling to reach the unsaved in Western Colorado. Please pray for opportunities to build relationships with community members and for support partners.

For more information on the Longs and how you can help support their work in Grand Junction, please contact the CBGC's Western Office at 970-249-3152.

Meet the Vigil Family

Jay and Del Vigil graduated from the Frontline Church Planting Center in Colorado Springs. They are now in the midst of starting Cross Training Church, a church plant in Colorado Springs. Their primary target group is individuals who need to make some significant changes to their physical and spiritual fitness. Their goal is to integrate physical fitness training with spiritual fitness.

Meet the Blake Family

Rob and Julie Blake are planting a house church network in Ouray, Colorado. They have come from pastoring full time in Virginia, to working full-time, secular jobs in Ouray. Their hope is to open a coffee shop, be  self-supporting, and plant house churches throughout Ouray County. Please pray for them as they build relationships, support their family and be used by God to reach a very secular mission field.
