The Baptist Foundation of Colorado (BFC) has some exciting news for you to hear and celebrate with us. The BFC has a record of assisting more than one of every five Colorado Baptist churches over the past 11 years with investments and/or loans at competitive rates of interest. This record does not take into account the number of churches that have benefited from our Will and Estate seminars or our Basic Accounting Principles classes. I have probably done the Basic Accounting Principles class in at least one fourth of the churches in Colorado. We, the BFC, are excited that we are making a difference in many of your churches.

In March this year I was blessed to receive a special invitation to travel to Charlotte, North Carolina, to be introduced to a life impacting traveling exhibit called “Passages.” This invitation came from Steve Green, the President of Hobby Lobby. He wanted to share with some Colorado evangelical leaders what “Passages” consisted of in preparation to moving the exhibit to Colorado Springs this month.

Dr. Charles E. Sharp, Executive Director of the Colorado Baptist General Convention, 1984-1993, passed away in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on February 28, 2013. He was 77.
Sharp came to Colorado in 1982 as the director of Church Training and Music, a position similar to one he held in the Northern Plains Baptist Convention. In a 2004 interview, Sharp described his role. “When I got to Colorado,” he said, “it wasn’t long until I realized that my heart was really in the discipleship area. That became the primary responsibility as long as I was in Church Training and Music.” One of his favorite tasks was leading pastor groups through MasterLife, a discipleship class.

Ponderosa Retreat and Conference Center welcomed the first group of volunteers for 2013 on January 6-15. Since their first volunteer trip in 2010, the group has returned once a year to serve earning themselves the friendly nickname “repeat offenders” by the staff at Ponderosa. Virgil, Doug, Mike, Don, Larry and another Mike traveled from Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas.
Erie, Colo.- On June 10, the people of Life Song Church in the quaint, little town of Erie gathered at 470 Briggs Street just as they had for each of their Sunday morning services of the past five years. However, this Sunday was distinct among all other Sundays as Life Song Church could now claim the building as its own.
This day served as a marker, as titled by Pastor Matthew Boardwell, in which their community of believers can look on as a testament to the Lord’s faithfulness.

It is time to prepare for this year’s CELEBRATION of the Nicy Murphy Colorado Missions Offering.I use the word “celebration” because this is a very special year for our offering.This year Nicy Murphy celebrates her 100th birthday and we want all Colorado Baptists to celebrate with her.It’s my desire that all our members have the opportunity to hear the impact this single woman has had and continues to have on our state and celebrate her life.
Not only is she a great missionary she is a gifted writer.Much of this year’s promotion will center on Nicy’s definition of Colorado Missions:
“It is ministering to souls who live in the midst of mountain grandeur, but who never lift their “eyes unto the hills” from whence their help might come; who enjoy God’s placid lakes, tumbling streams and majestic waterfalls, but who have never drunk of the Water of Life; who shepherd the sheep on a thousand grassy hillsides, but who do not know the Good Shepherd; who reap the golden grain from the fertile plains, but who are starving for the Bread of Life.” Nicy Murphy 1959

The stifling heat of summer makes you feel constantly moist; banana, coconut, and mango trees bearing fruit treasures on every corner; drenching monsoon rains swelling the enormous muddy rivers; dark skinned, brown eyed, black haired people everywhere giving you their “Salaam” (greeting of Peace); Not a mountain nor foothill in sight; This is obviously not Colorado.

Paul begins his letter to the saints in Philippi with these very familiar words of thanksgiving for every thought he has of them. This is my sentiment as I write this short article. Thanks for giving me the privilege of serving Colorado Baptists as your Executive Director. We have just finished the 55th annual meeting of the Colorado Baptist Convention. By many reports, this was the best annual meeting we’ve had in recent history – a meeting of great inspiration, unity and fellowship. One pastor who came to our state about six years ago told me it’s the best meeting he’s attended in the last 20 years. Another pastor who has attended every meeting in Colorado for the last 15 years also said that it was the best he has ever attended. There were many more who expressed similar responses to our meeting in Breckenridge.

In the community near Wray Southern Baptist Church a 43 year old man had a stroke of his spinal cord and was paralyzed from the rib cage down. At the time the church was preparing a yard sale in order to raise money for new tables, but was compelled to instead use all the money collected for this man and his family.

Because of our association's interest in starting a Hispanic work, I asked Sam Caballero to come up from Denver to prayer walk North Brook Villas in Montrose and to advise me of ways to begin a Hispanic work. We spent about an hour passing out Find It Here flyers and praying for the community. A man in a golf cart came racing up to me, "You are not allowed to pass out flyers in this park!" Of course I apologized. He told me that I could go to the office and leave our information there for the people to pick up if they wanted to have it.

What unites us as Colorado Baptists? What common bond do we share that will help us truly impact this state by penetrating lostness?Is it the Cooperative Program? Is it the Baptist Faith and Message? Is it sharing particular affinities such as being a product of a “mountain/western” culture? Is it geographical proximity? Is it style of worship? Is it our methodology and ecclesiology? What truly unites us as Colorado Baptists?
While I am a strong proponent of the Cooperative Program and believe it to be the most effective means of fulfilling the Great Commission through shared resources, and I subscribe wholeheartedly to the Baptist Faith and Message 2000, and appreciate the diversity of our many worship styles, methodological and ecclesiological expressions of church, I believe there is something more deeply fundamental that unites us. It is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
I am afraid that we are living in an evangelical culture where the gospel is being assumed and whenever this happens, the next generation almost always suffers a drift into liberalism, pragmatism, and a down-grade on the most important message we are called to share. In 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, Paul reminds us that the gospel is of first importance. He writes, “Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you- unless you believed in vain.For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.”

One of the blessings of working at the Colorado Baptists’ convention office is getting to see the reports coming in from across the state that tell what God is doing through Christians dedicated to Him in sharing the Gospel of Christ in a variety of ministries. Colorado is made up of many cultures and it takes a lot of prayer and stepping out in faith to share Christ and meet needs in these diverse people groups. These ministries encompass Christian Challenge ministries to students on Colorado’s university and college campuses, food and clothing ministries, house churches and small group studies, new church plants and churches that have been around a while.

In the last edition of the Rocky Mountain Baptist I wrote about the insidious threat of internet pornography that is trapping some of our believers. I urged our men to flee evil. With this edition I’d like to suggest that there is another ministry killer out there that is more subtle than the computer. This “killer” doesn’t just threaten our ministers but it threatens all believers; both men and women. It’s called burnout or perhaps spiritual fatigue.
